Natural Resources Training

Looking to find your niche in BC’s growing natural resource sector?

This comprehensive, field-based program introduces participants to a wide variety of possible career paths in natural resources, from Wildland Firefighting to Junior Forestry Technician. Covering 17 valuable industry certifications in just 18 weeks, participants will gain skills, support and hands-on experience to launch a fulfilling career in BC’s natural resource industry. This program includes 15 weeks of classroom and field-based training followed by a three-week work placement with a local employer.

Program Details

Starts October 1, 2024 in Vanderhoof, BC

Participants from the Wildfire & Integrated Natural Resources Training will come out of the program with a variety of valuable skills and up to 17 industry certifications that are highly sought after by employers in the natural resource sector.   • Basic Chainsaw Operator

  • Basic Brush Saw Operator

  • BC Hydro Tree Worker (Green Card)

  • Bear Aware

  • Canadian Safety Council ATV/UTV Operator

  • Helicopter Safety Awareness

  • Pesticide Applicator

  • Occupational First Aid - Level 3

  • Wildlife Danger Tree Assessor (DTA) Forest Harvesting and Silviculture Modules

  • Wildfire Suppression and Safety Certifications (S100, S185, ICS 100, S212, S211, S232, S230)

  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHIMIS)

This course with Stillwater Consulting is an amazing experience for anyone looking to enter the forest or wildfire industries. It solidified my goal to become a Registered Professional Forester and showed me many pathways to gain industry experience along the way. I now have valuable certifications, training on all types of light power equipment, tons of forestry knowledge, and over a dozen fantastic trainers, contacts and references to help further my career.

Eligibility Requirements

Currently unemployed or underemployed (see definitions)

  • Must live in or surrounding Vanderhoof region.

  • Must meet basic EI Eligibility requirements by answering yes to any of the following questions:

    • Are you currently on EI or have you been on EI in the past 5 years?

    • Have you had an EI benefit period that ended within the previous 60 months?

    • Have you earned more than $2000 of insurable earnings in 5 of the last 10 years (and paid EI premiums on those earnings?)

    • Are you a British Columbia Employment and Assistance client?

Here's what our application process looks like:

  • Connect with WorkBC to determine your eligibility and complete online applications.

  • Complete a guided interview with a WorkBC Case Manager.

  • Complete an interview with Stillwater Consulting staff.

  • Successful interviewees will meet with WorkBC once more to go through final approvals before starting the program.
